Kits Kitty sent the St. Modestos poster to everyone on our Newsletter list. The replies were all postive except for one from M**. His brief comment translated said “How ridiculous”. He did not ‘unsubscribe’, just two words. So KK was curious as to what aspect of the event or was it the whole event or the notion that animals should be blessed that was ridiculous. So she wrote back - briefly - as most never respond.

Καταρχήν θελω να ζητησω συγνώμη για την ασχημη συμπεριφορά μου.

Τσαντίστηκα με τη λεγόμενη Χριστιανική θρησκεία στο οτι εφαρμόζει μεθοδους και τρόπους για το κέρδος και μόνο. Όπως στο να κανει αγιασμό σε αυτοκινητα σε ζωα κλπ. Το κίνητρο δεν μου αρέσει….Και μου κάνει εντύπωση πως συμμερίζεστε μια τέτοια άποψη.

Η Αγία Γραφή πολύ σωστά διδάσκει τη δίκαιη και ελεήμονα μεταχείριση των κατώτερων πλασμάτων. Μάλιστα ο Θεός παρουσιάζει τον εαυτό του ως τον Στοργικό Προμηθευτή που φροντίζει για τη ζωή και την ευημερία τους. (Παρ 12:10· Ψλ 145:15, 16) Ο Μωσαϊκός Νόμος επέβαλλε την παροχή κατάλληλης φροντίδας για τα κατοικίδια ζώα. Όταν κάποιος έβρισκε κατοικίδια ζώα που είχαν ξεστρατίσει, έπρεπε να τα επιστρέψει με ασφάλεια στον ιδιοκτήτη τους και, όταν αυτά είχαν καταρρεύσει από το φορτίο τους, έπρεπε να τα ξαλαφρώσει. (Εξ 23:4, 5) Όταν τα υπέβαλλαν σε εργασίες, έπρεπε να τα μεταχειρίζονται με συμπόνια. (Δευ 22:10· 25:4) Όπως ο άνθρωπος, έτσι και τα ζώα έπρεπε να ωφελούνται από την ανάπαυση του Σαββάτου. (Εξ 20:10· 23:12· Δευ 5:14) Τα επικίνδυνα ζώα έπρεπε να βρίσκονται υπό έλεγχο ή να θανατώνονται. (Γε 9:5· Εξ 21:28, 29) Τα θεοφοβούμενα άτομα βλέπουν τα ζώα ως μέρος της γενναιόδωρης προμήθειας που έχει κάνει ο Θεός για την ευημερία του ανθρώπου. Τα ζώα έχουν εξυπηρετήσει τον άνθρωπο ως υποζύγια, ως πηγή τροφής και ρουχισμού, ως παράγοντες υγιεινής, καθώς και ως βοηθοί στις σημαντικές εργασίες του οργώματος και της συγκομιδής. Η ποικιλία που παρουσιάζουν ως προς το σχήμα και το χρώμα είναι χάρμα οφθαλμών, ενώ οι συνήθειες και τα ένστικτά τους αποτελούσαν και εξακολουθούν να αποτελούν έναν ευρύ τομέα έρευνας όσον αφορά τα θαύματα του δημιουργικού έργου του Θεού. Μολονότι τα ζώα πεθαίνουν ακριβώς όπως ο άνθρωπος, δεν έχουν ελπίδα ανάστασης όπως εκείνος.
Εφόσον ο Θεός χορήγησε στον πρώτο άνθρωπο τον Αδάμ εξουσία πάνω στα διάφορα πλάσματα της γης, ήταν απολύτως κατάλληλο να του δώσει και το προνόμιο να ονομάσει αυτά τα πλάσματα. (Γε 1:26· 2:19, 20) Το ότι ο άνθρωπος επρόκειτο να έχει σε υποταγή τα ζώα συνεπαγόταν για αυτόν μια ευθύνη για την οποία θα ήταν πάντοτε υπόλογος στον Θεό.—Λου 12:48.

Ο Θεός έχει να ασχοληθεί με πολυ σοβαρότερα πράγματα όπως ειναι ο άνθρωπος και όχι με τα ζώα.

Ο σκοπός του Θεού που το όνομά του είναι Ιεχωβά είναι ο εξής:

Παγκόσμια Ειρήνη και Ενωμένη Λατρεία. «Θα σφυρηλατήσουν τα σπαθιά τους σε υνιά και τα δόρατά τους σε δρεπάνια. Δεν θα σηκώσει σπαθί έθνος εναντίον έθνους ούτε θα μάθουν πια τον πόλεμο».—Ησαΐας 2:2-4.

Ειρήνη Μεταξύ Ανθρώπων και Ζώων. «Ο λύκος θα κατοικεί κάποιο διάστημα με το αρνί, και με το κατσικάκι θα ξαπλώνει η λεοπάρδαλη, και το μοσχάρι και το χαιτοφόρο νεαρό λιοντάρι και το καλοθρεμμένο ζώο θα είναι όλα μαζί· και μικρό αγόρι θα τα οδηγεί. Και η αγελάδα και η αρκούδα μαζί θα βόσκουν· μαζί θα ξαπλώνουν τα μικρά τους. Ακόμη και το λιοντάρι θα τρώει άχυρο όπως ο ταύρος. . . . Δεν θα κάνουν κακό ούτε θα προκαλούν καταστροφή σε όλο το άγιο βουνό μου· επειδή η γη θα γεμίσει από τη γνώση του Ιεχωβά όπως τα νερά σκεπάζουν τη θάλασσα».—Ησαΐας 11:6-9.

Άφθονη Τροφή για Όλους. «Ο Ιεχωβά των στρατευμάτων θα κάνει για όλους τους λαούς, σε αυτό το βουνό, ένα συμπόσιο με φαγητά που έχουν άφθονο λάδι, συμπόσιο με κρασί αφημένο στην τρυγία του, με φαγητά που έχουν άφθονο λάδι και είναι γεμάτα μυελό, με κρασί αφημένο στην τρυγία του, στραγγισμένο».—Ησαΐας 25:6.

Όχι Πια Θάνατος. «[Ο Θεός] θα καταπιεί το θάνατο για πάντα, και ο Υπέρτατος Κύριος Ιεχωβά θα εξαλείψει οπωσδήποτε τα δάκρυα από όλα τα πρόσωπα. Και το όνειδος του λαού του θα το αφαιρέσει από όλη τη γη, γιατί ο ίδιος ο Ιεχωβά το είπε αυτό».—Ησαΐας 25:8.

Οι Νεκροί θα Αναστηθούν. «Οι νεκροί σου θα ζήσουν. Τα πτώματά μας θα εγερθούν. Ξυπνήστε και κραυγάστε χαρούμενα, εσείς που κατοικείτε στο χώμα . . . Η γη θα αφήσει να πέσουν με γέννα ακόμη και εκείνοι που βρίσκονται ανίσχυροι στο θάνατο».—Ησαΐας 26:19.

Ο Μεσσίας ως Δίκαιος Κριτής. «Δεν θα κρίνει με βάση αυτό που βλέπουν τα μάτια του ούτε θα παρέχει έλεγχο σύμφωνα με αυτό που ακούν τα αφτιά του και μόνο. Αλλά με δικαιοσύνη θα κρίνει τους ασήμαντους, και με ευθύτητα θα παρέχει έλεγχο προς όφελος των πράων της γης».—Ησαΐας 11:3, 4.

Οι Τυφλοί και οι Κουφοί θα Θεραπευτούν. «Τα μάτια των τυφλών θα ανοιχτούν και τα αφτιά των κουφών θα πάψουν να είναι κλειστά».—Ησαΐας 35:5.

Η Έρημος θα Γίνει Παραγωγική. «Η έρημος και η άνυδρη περιοχή θα νιώσουν αγαλλίαση, και η έρημη πεδιάδα θα χαρεί και θα ανθίσει σαν το σαφράνι. Εξάπαντος θα ανθίσει, και μάλιστα θα χαρεί με χαρά και με κραυγές ευφροσύνης».—Ησαΐας 35:1, 2.

Νέα Γη. «Εγώ δημιουργώ νέους ουρανούς [μια νέα ουράνια κυβέρνηση] και νέα γη [μια δίκαιη νέα ανθρώπινη κοινωνία]· και τα παλιά δεν θα έρχονται στη μνήμη ούτε θα ανεβαίνουν στην καρδιά. Αλλά να αγάλλεστε και να χαίρεστε παντοτινά για αυτό που δημιουργώ. . . . [Οι κάτοικοι του υποσχεμένου νέου κόσμου του Θεού] θα χτίσουν σπίτια και θα κατοικήσουν· θα φυτέψουν αμπέλια και θα φάνε τον καρπό τους. I apologize that I do not speak Greek. I have been in Greece for 4 years and spend much of my time working with the abused and abandoned animals in the city and they do not require my words to be in any language but to be spoken with love.

Thank you for the Bible quotes. I have been wanting to compile a list of quotes to use on our website (www.friendsofanimals-nf.com) for our Christian members.

I used the online translator to read your email and I understand your point but while it is wonderful that the Bible has all these quotes and guidelines for treatment of animals, if the people hearing and reading the words do not listen to them, then all the quotes in the world will not change the fact that animals in Greece are not treated as God wishes.

There are over 300,000 stray dogs (no number on how many cats) in Greece which in its self tells us that the human are turning their backs on them, throwing them away like garbage, and many times before they are abandoned they are abused with acid, knives, wire, sticks, feet and hands. Many are denied food and water and starve to death. Others have their illness ignored and they die long deaths from disease. In my municipality (Nea Filadelphia) this past year there were group poisonings of stray and beloved dogs from families poisoned in August, multiple intention hits by cars and motorcycles, 9 abandonment of mothers and puppies in the park, litters of puppies/kittens taken out of garbage bins alive, a puppy hanging, and an acid burning.

When surrounded with such ugliness and evidence of indifference, how can the people be happy? When I go about my daily business I smile and say Kalimera to people I meet and no one smiles back or even looks at me. I am a foreigner who is being friendly and polite. When I walk my dog (rescued after being thrown from a fast driving car) people yell out their windows to get that dog off their street, an old man threw a rock from his garden, and we must watch for poison laid out under the trees. This is no life for human or animal. I have come to hate this country for its lack of compassion.

I receive so many emails through our website from people writing how their lives have changed since they started helping the street dogs or after they adopted a dog into their home. They notice the change in their children and their families for the better.

So in a country where the Church is just as powerful as the State, why would we not want to have the protectors of our souls stand up and say ‘it is time for you to accept that we live with many animals and please stop abandoning, abusing, killing, or mistreating them’? It is about education from a higher power and we hope that people will listen.The old myths and superstitions have no place in a modern country. Killing dogs and cats because they are black is a horrible thing. Kicking and beating a stray because of the fear of rabies and skin disease is wrong. These beliefs are outdated and dangerous to pass onto the children who then live in fear of such wonderful creatures.

We make this event because the Orthodox in our volunteer group asked for it. We make this event to be about education and acceptance. It took many weeks of discussion to get this church to allow the animals on its soil (and onto its steps and front meeting area) for the Blessing. We are thankful and we hope that many will attend for the symbolic blessing and that those driving by in their cars will see the love and want to be a part of it.

This blessing is important. I hope I have explained it well enough so that you see the necessity of it also.

Greek Orthodox Churches around the world celebrate St.
Modestos throughout the month of December.
Traditionally the event begins with a blessing of the water,
an invocation of the Holy Spirit upon God’s creation, and
then each pet—or stuffed animal for those children without
furry friends—is blessed with the holy water and the
special prayer of St. Modestos.

St. Modestos is the patron saint of animals in the Orthodox
Church. Patriarch Modestos (AD 292) had a great affection
for animals—he saw them as sublime and mysterious
gifts from God. Often he would bless the livestock of the
faithful, praying for their health and survival, and glorying in
the vastness and beauty of all God made. In fact, he has
been known for centuries as our patron saint of domestic

Performing this historic Blessing of the Animals will be
Father Alexandros and Father Michalis and we thank
them profusely for their support of the first Blessing of the
Animals in Athens in modern times.

The location is at Aghia Triada Neas Filadelfias, near the
old AEK stadium, in the middle of Fokon, Smyrnis and
Chrysostomou Smyrnis streets. Dekeleias is 1 block
West, the buses stop here and a the Perissos Metro (the
electrico line that allows pets on board - muzzled or in
carriers) is a few blocks East.

Remember this event is not limited to dogs! Please bring
any pet that you have and would like to be blessed. If your
pet is ill or out of the country and cannot attend, bring a
photo or stuffed animal that represents them.

A large colourful Donation box will be at the entry way of
the Church into which you can place Christmas gifts for
the 60+ dogs that live in our Shelter. Such as large collars,
leashes, medicines (Frontline/Efiprol, Stronghold,
Augmentin), canned puppy/kitten food, blankets and toys.

On World Animal Day (October 4th), the Filozoikos Nea
Filadelphia held its first Blessing of the Animals in the
name of St. Francis of Assisi, in the quaint and cozy St.
Paul’s Anglican Church in the centre of Athens.

It was well attended by many locals and foreigners.

This Friday we start at the annual ACS Bazaar where the students have formed their own Friends of Animals Club. Kiki and I will assist the club members in hosting a table for the Shelter. With 70+ members in the club, we anticipate great sales and hopefully some new homes for our dogs. Saturday/Sunday is the SPAZ Bazaar to benefit their efforts and they have graciously offered us a table outside, so please stop by on your way in a leave a little donation under our umbrella!

Αυτή την Παρασκευή ξεκινάμε με το ετήσιο ACS Bazaar όπου οι μαθητές της σχολής έχουν δημιουργήσει τη δική τους Φιλοζωική λέσχη Νέας Φιλαδέλφειας. Η Κική κι εγώ θα βοηθήσουμε τα μέλη της λέσχης με το περίπτερο που θα στήσουν για να βοηθήσουν το Φιλοζωικό. Με περισσότερα από 70 μέλη στη λέσχη, ευελπιστούμε σε πολλές πωλήσεις και ακόμα καλύτερα, νέα σπίτια για τους φιλοξενούμενούς μας σκύλους. Το Σάββατο και την Κυριακή είναι το Bazaar που διοργανώνει το ΣΠΑΖ προκειμένου να ενισχύσουν τη δράση τους και μάλιστα γενεόδωρα μας προσέφεραν έναν πάγκο στον εξωτερικό χώρο, οπότε είστε ευρόσδεκτοι να περάσετε, να αγοράσετε κάτι ή να κάνετε μια ευγενική προσφορά και να σας φιλοξενήσουμε κάτω από την ομπρέλα μας!

The cosmos has a funny way of balancing itself but we wish it would stop playing at the Shelter! We had 10 adoptions in the past 2 weeks: Themistokles, Oscar, Edna, and Platonos had been in the shelter for almost their whole lives; Myrto the Pitbull - once adopted and twice abandoned; Magdalena the Doberman - for almost 8 months; Ericos, Klea, Christie stayed for under a month, and a small dog did not make it to the Shelter before he was adopted! So 10 out and in comes 10 puppies - 6 rescued from a warehouse lot, 2 abandoned in NF, and 2 left in one of our Volunteers garden. Balanced again and still over capacity by 35 dogs.

Το Σύμπαν έχει έναν περίεργο τρόπο να ισορροπεί, αλλά εμείς θα ευχόμασταν να μην το έκανε αυτό για το καταφύγιό μας: Είχαμε 10 υιοθεσίες τις περασμένες 2 εβδομάδες: Θμιστοκλής, Oscar, Edna και Πλάτωνας που είχαν περάσει σχεδόν όλη τους τη ζωή στο καταφύγιο. Η Μυρτώ το πιτ-μπουλ που έίχε εγκαταλειφθεί 2 φορές και είχε υιοθετηθεί άλλη μία. Η Μάγδα, το ντόμπερμαν, την είχαμε φιλοξενήσει για σχεδόν 8 μήνες. Ο Ερίκος, η Κλέα, η Κριστίν που έμεινε μαζί μας για λιγότερο από ένα μήνα και ένα ακόμα μικρόσωμο σκυλάκι που υιθετήθηκε πριν ακόμα φτάσει στο καταφύγιο! Έτσι λοιπόν είχαμε 10 εξαγωγές και 10 κουταβο-εισαγωγές -6 τα οποία διασώθηκαν από μια εγκατειλημένη αποθήκη, 2 εγκαταλείφθηκαν στη Νέα Φιλαδέλφεια και άλλα δύο που τα πέταξαν στον κήπο εθελοντή μας. Επομένως μία από τα ίδια και παραμένουμε με 35 σκύλους πάνω από τις δυνατότητες του καταφυγίου.

Today I placed an edited version of the advertisement on the website for any Filozoiki groups outside of Athens to download and use. Our name and URL was removed, so if you live in a small town, submit the advertisement to your local radio station to play and further the Adopt! Dont Shop! message throughout the country.

Ο σταθμός Τhema 98.9 πρόσθεσε το σύνθημά μας “Υιοθετήστε και μην αγοράζετε” στο πρόγραμμά του μαζί με άλλους 7 σταθμούς! Σήμερα ανάρτησα μία προσαρμοσμένη εκδοχή από το σποτάκι μας στο site μας, ώστε να μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί από κάθε Φιλοζωικό σωματείο και εκτός Αθήνας απλά κάνοντας dowload. Το όνομα και το URL μας έχουν αφαιρεθεί, έτσι ώστε ακόμα και αν μένετε σε μια πόλη της επαρχίας, στείλτε το σποτάκι σε τοπικούς ραδιοσταθμούς και προωθήστε τις υιοθεσίες με το σύνθημά μας σε όλη την Ελλάδα!

Πήρα συνέντευξη από την Ελένη μέσω facebook, η προσπάθειες της οποίας βοήθησαν στη σωτηρία μίας σκυλίτσας (Θέλμα) και ενός γατούλη (Λούης) τα οποία ήταν παράλητα από την μέση και πίσω, και με τον τρόπο αυτό τα δύο ζώα βρέθηκαν από ένα πάρκινγκ σε ένα ζεστό σπιτικό στη Γερμανία. Εάν λοιπόν αυτή η 27χρονη κοπέλα από την Καβάλα μπορεί να το κάνει αυτό, τότε μπορείς κι εσύ! Διάβασε την ιστορία της και μάθε πώς και ποιοι ήταν αυτοί που την βοήθησαν καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της προσπάθειάς της.

We now have an official confirmation from the Church to have this event and a location: Aghia Triada Neas Filadelfias, near the old AEK stadium, in the middle of Fokon, Smyrnis and Chrysostomou Smyrnis streets. Two Orthodox priests will provide the ancient blessing of St. Modestos. All are welcome with their pets (cats, dogs, rabbits, snakes, everything!) so please ensure that you have proper restraints and cases for everyone you bring!

Έχουμε πλέον επίσημη επιβεβαίωση από την Εκκλησία προκειμένου να πραγματοποιηθεί ο αγιασμός: Ο τόπος είναι ο Ναός της Αγίας Τριάδος στη Νέα Φιλαδέλφεια, κοντά στο παλιό γήπεδο της ΑΕΚ, στη μέση των οδών Φοκών, Σμύρνης και Χρισοστόμου Σμύρνης. Δύο ορθόδοξοι ιερείς θα τελέσουν τον Αγιασμό τιμώντας τη μνήμη του Αγίου Μόδεστου. Εϊστε όλοι ευπρόσδεκτοι με τα κατοικίδιά σας (γάτες, σκύλους, κουνέλια, φίδια, τα πάντα!), επομένως σας παρακαλούμε θερμά να έχετε και τα απαραίτητα μέσα περιορισμού (λουριά, κλουβάκια κλπ) για κάθε επισκέπτη που θα φέρετε!

This Friday we start at the annual ACS Bazaar where the students have formed their own Friends of Animals Club. Kiki K. and I will assist the club members in hosting a table for the Shelter. With 70+ members in the club, we anticipate great sales and hopefully some new homes for our dogs. Saturday/Sunday is the SPAZ Bazaar to benefit their efforts and they have graciously offered us a table outside, so please stop by on your way in a leave a little donation under our umbrella! Our Christmas Bazaar is on December 12/13th at the KAPI Seniors Centre in Nea Filadelphia. All details available on our Calendar page.

If you want to help out with donations for either the Shelter or the bazaar sales that we attend, please visit our WishList page for ideas and the drop-off addresses are at the bottom of the page. Topping our list this month is Puppy Food (both wet and dry). For sales we can always use donations of winter clothing - jackets, sweaters and boots especially, books in Greek and English, household items such linens, blanket or carpets, giftware such as candles and ornaments, childrens toys and games - not broken or missing pieces, etc.

The cosmos has a funny way of balancing itself but we wish it would stop playing at the Shelter! We had 10 adoptions in the past 2 weeks: Themistokles, Oscar, Edna, and Platonos had been in the shelter for almost their whole lives; Myrto the Pitbull - once adopted and twice abandoned; Magdalena the Doberman - for almost 8 months; Ericos, Klea, Christie stayed for under a month, and a small dog did not make it to the Shelter before he was adopted! So 10 out and in comes 10 puppies - 6 rescued from a warehouse lot, 2 abandoned in NF, and 2 left in one of our Volunteers garden. Balanced again and still over capacity by 35 dogs.
